How to Stock an Alchemist Lab

Regarded by many modern people as quackery or magic, alchemy was and is a complex practice bridging scientific and mystical thought. For the early alchemists, this meant an investigation of nature and a spiritual path in the pursuit of which they founded modern chemistry. Numerous early practitioners of science, including Sir Isaac Newton, were alchemists. Most modern alchemists are followers of New Age spiritual paths or students of the occult.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a starting point for your alchemical endeavors. Alchemy is an ancient family of traditions, with versions originating in Egypt, China, India and Greece. It is most well-known today through its medieval European sources. Decide whether you want to focus on one of these traditions or begin with a modern New Age approach.

    • 2

Get the right books. Texts on alchemy both ancient and modern abound, and a well-stocked library is a crucial part of any alchemist's laboratory. Start with standard texts and collect more obscure ones as your interests develop.

    • 3

Study diligently. The symbolism of alchemy is rich and complex. In order to practice, you should have at least a beginners understanding of the symbolism and philosophical tenets of this art and science. Your studies will guide your choice of what to work on in your lab, and consequently your decisions about supplies and materials.

    • 4

Obtain the necessary laboratory equipment. This will include many items that are found in today's standard chemistry lab. For example, flasks, test tubes, burners and the like.

    • 5

Find a location for the lab. Remember how the high school chemistry lab smelled and keep that in mind when choosing the site.

    • 6

Buy a fire extinguisher and put it in the lab. Alchemy presents a rather serious fire hazard. Note that fire extinguishers are rated for chemical, electrical and other types of fires.
