How to Dowse a Water Well Site

Dowsing is an old method of finding water that flows underground. It takes an open mind and practice to master the ancient skill. Practitioners swear by it, and many make a living locating water and other materials. Start slowly and take your time when learning how to dowse. You'll find water before you know it.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your dowsing tool. Many dowsers use pendulums or rods. You can fashion a pendulum out of any object on a small chain or string. Make your rod from any metal that can be bent into an "L." Coat hangers even work. A pendulum is recommended for beginners.

    • 2

Make a small chart for practice. Draw 2 lines like an "X" and "Y" axis on a graph. Label the top of the y-axis as "No" and the left end of the x-axis as "Yes." Draw a third line off of these two and label it "Ready for Question."

    • 3

Hold the pendulum over the chart. Purposely swing the pendulum over the "Ready for Question" line. Relax into a meditative state, free from heavy thought. Ask the pendulum questions you already know the answer to and see if it swings accordingly.

    • 4

Practice working with your pendulum every day for about 10 minutes. Consider taking a short course or attend a seminar for dowsers. There are many subtleties to dowsing.

    • 5

Phrase your questions carefully. Many dowsers report confusing answers that have to do with syntax errors. For example, one account claims that a rod pointed at a man with the last name "North" rather than the direction North.

    • 6

Look for water once you are confident in your abilities. Choose your wording, relax and gently focus on your intention to find well water. Hold your pendulum over a map of the area. When your questions lead you to a specific location, you are finished. Drill for water and see if your dowsing skills were right.
