How to Build Your Own Bobblehead

A bobblehead is a toy with a large head that bounces on a spring. It can be a caricature of an ordinary person, a celebrity or a cartoon character. You can make your own bobblehead as a fun gift for a family member or friend as a cute way to commemorate a holiday or special event. Making a bobble-head can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it, depending on how much time you have to design it and put it together.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a pencil and paper to draw a design for your bobblehead before you get started. This will give you an image to refer back to as you work. Include how tall you want to make your doll.

    • 2

Remove some of the clay from the container and replace the cap to keep the rest of the clay moist. Shape the clay into the body of your bobblehead doll. Do not include the neck.

    • 3

Insert the toothpick into the body of your doll where you will build the neck so that it is about a half of an inch deep into the clay.

    • 4

Surround the toothpick with crumpled aluminum foil, creating an elongated cylinder the same width as your marker for the neck of your doll. You want to make the neck extra long on a bobblehead doll.

    • 5

Cut a piece of wire with your wire cutters that is the same length as the height of your doll. Coil the wire you have cut around the magic marker.

    • 6

Slip the coil over the elongated neck of your bobblehead. The coil should sit at the top of the neck, with the coils surrounding about the top inch of the doll's neck.

    • 7

Remove a piece of sticky tack, roll it around in your hands to make it pliable and stick it on the end of the coil so you can attach to head of your doll to the coil later.

    • 8

Cut four squares of aluminum foil with your scissors that are five inches by five inches. Shape one square of foil into a partial sphere.

    • 9

Wrap the other foil squares over the first foil sheet in layers to create a thicker partial sphere that is hollow inside for the head of your doll. Shape the head of your doll.

    • 10

Remove more clay from the container and shape it into a thin and flat layer. Place this over the partial foil sphere.

    • 11

Paint the head, neck, and body of your doll with acrylic paints. Let them dry before continuing.

    • 12

Place the hollow head of your doll onto the coil.

    • 13

Insert the non-bristle end of a paintbrush into the hollow head and poke the sticky tack while holding the bobblehead in place to make it stick to the sticky tack.
