How to Identify Johnny West Dolls

The Marx Toy Company produced a series of dolls that were based on cowboys and settlers and other people that inhabited the "wild west." Both female characters and animals accompanied the Johnny West character, along with a variety of accessories. The distinctive styling and construction of the Johnny West doll can help you determine if it is an original or an imitation. The procedures do not require any physical disassembly of the dolls and it will not cause any damage.

  Examine the clothing on the doll to see if it is shaped plastic or if it is made of cloth. If the clothing is colored plastic that is part of the doll, then you are looking at a Johnny West doll.

  Look through the plastic of the Marx toy box set to see what accessories are included with the doll. If a horse is included, then you are looking at a Johnny West doll. Every authentic figure is accompanied by a horse.

  Check the doll to see if the hands and hair are both soft, flesh-colored plastic. Determine if the hip and knee joints are made from a hard, caramel-colored plastic. Both of these elements signify an original Johnny West doll.
