List of Decepticons

The Decepticons have been the main villains of the "Transformers" franchise ever since Hasbro released the first toys in 1984. Ruthless, cruel and bent on conquest, the Decepticons are opposed by the heroic Autobots. Hundreds of different Decepticon characters have appeared in animated series, toys, films, comic books and video games.
  1. 1980s Cartoons

    • Megatron, the tyrannical leader of the Decepticons, first appeared in the "Transformers" animated series in 1984. He was accompanied by his second-in-command, Starscream, a scheming coward who sought to replace Megatron as leader. Megatron's other lieutenant was Soundwave, a communications specialist who commanded a team of smaller cassette robots. New Decepticons were introduced later, including the Constructicons that could combine to form an enormous robot called Devastator. A 1986 animated feature introduced Galvatron, an upgraded version of Megatron, and his henchmen Scourge and Cyclonus.

    Marvel Comics

    • Marvel Comics' monthly "Transformers" title launched in 1984. The characters were mainly the same, but they had different roles. Shockwave, a cold-blooded and ruthless killer who commanded Decepticon forces on Cybertron, emerged as a major character in the comics. So did Ratbat, a cassette robot who became leader of the Decepticons for a time. Straxus, a Decepticon dictator who succeeded Megatron, played a large role in the UK version.

    Live-Action Films

    • The live-action film "Transformers" from 2007 had Megatron as the antogonist and Starscream as his sidekick. The film's other Decepticon characters were Barricade, Blackout, Bonecrusher, Brawl, Frenzy and Scorponok. The 2009 sequel, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" added Sideways, Demolishor, Wheelie and Grindor. One Decepticon character, Jetfire, changes his allegiance to the Autobots during "Fallen."

    Video Games

    • As of 2011, there were more than two dozen video games based on the "Transformers" franchise. Most of these feature the Autobots as the main characters, but some allow the player to play as the Decepticons. "Transformers: War for Cybertron," released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, featured Megatron, Brawl, Soundwave and five other Decepticons as playable characters. "Transformers: Decepticons," which came out for the Nintendo DS in 2007, introduced a new character, Create-a-Bot, as its protagonist.
