How to Paint Warhammer Dwarfs

Warhammer is a tabletop strategy war game in which players build and paint armies of miniature figurines then maneuver them to defeat an opponent. A mainstay of many armies is the dwarf character, but painting them can be challenge. You may be tempted to use only a few colors to get the job done quickly, but spending a little extra time on shadow and highlight detail can result in a more authentic look. Although the standard colors are blue, metal and gold , you can change the colors used as appropriate to your army.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble your dwarf as you would any other character, but do not attach the shield. This will make it easier for you to paint body detail, particularly the beard.

    • 2

Use a chaos black spray to coat the entire figure and allow it to dry. This provides an even undercoat.

    • 3

Paint the dwarf's cloth with fenris gray then layer with shadow gray to give the impression of folds in the material. Work a little watered-down chaos black into the recesses for shadow and use space wolves gray to highlight where the light would be.

    • 4

Paint the metal chainmail and axe-head with boltgun metal then wash with badab black. This highlights certain areas so as to give the impression of glistening in the sunlight. Use boltgun metal for this. For extra highlights use chainmail paint.

    • 5

Paint the gold on the wristband, helmet and beard ring with a 50/50 mixture of scorched brown and shining bold. This may appear a little dark, but if you then layer it with shining gold you will achieve a more authentic worn look. Wash a 50/50 mixture of watered-down scorched brown and chaos black into the recesses for shadow and highlight with mithril silver.

    • 6

Paint the blue trim with a regal blue and wash badab black into the recesses. For that highlighting technique, use a 50/50 mixture of regal blue and space wolves gray, then use space wolves gray again on top.

    • 7

Paint the non-gold part of the helmet with regal blue and layer with enchanted blue, then wash watered down chaos black into the recesses. For the highlights, use ice blue.

    • 8

Paint the horns with scorched brown. Make them darker at the base and lighter at the top as a natural horn would be. To achieve this, feather the base of the horn with a 50/50 mixture of scorched brown and bleached bone. Use a 30/70 mixture further up the horn and finish with bleached bone by itself for the tip.

    • 9

Paint the hands and face with dwarf flesh paint then wash with watered-down dark flesh. Wash it again with watered down scorched brown to give the impression of a life spent in a mine, then layer with dwarf flesh once more to highlight. Finally, use a 50/50 mixture of dwarf flesh/bleached bone to add extra highlights.

    • 10

Paint the beard with scorched brown and wash badab black into the recesses. Highlight with bestial brown and snakebite leather.

    • 11

Paint the shield, beginning with the gold detailing. Use a 50/50 mixture of scorched brown and shining gold and layer with shining gold. This is exactly the same as the gold on the body. Add that shadow and highlight effect as before. Wash a watered-down mix of scorched brown and chaos black into the recesses of the gold and highlight with mithril silver.

    • 12

Paint the main body of the shield with regal blu and layer with enchanted blue. Wash watered-down chaos black into the recesses and highlight with ice blue.

    • 13

Attach the shield to the body.
