Superman Toys in the 1940s

Since the first "Superman" comic printing in 1938, the popularity of Superman has increased, spawning numerous live-action and animated series, movies and merchandise. With the success of the comic book came the launch of both animated and live action series starring the Man of Steel, beginning in the early 1940's. During this time, many different types of toys and related merchandise were also manufactured and sold. Some of these toys are now considered valuable collectibles--selling for many times their original value--and highly sought after by collectors.
  1. Rings

    • Several different Superman rings were produced in the 1940's. These rings were issued in conjunction with D.C. Comics promotion and went out to members of the Superman Club of America. Other Superman rings from the 1940's include the extremely rare Superman Secret Compartment Ring and the Superman Crusader Ring, which was part of a Kellog's Corporation promotion.

    Action Figures

    • Several action figures depicting Superman and other series characters were created in the 1940's. Some of the earliest were simple wind-up toys made of tin, but various rubber action figures were also produced.

    Other Items

    • A wide variety of other Superman toys were also manufactured in the 1940's. These include Superman capes, Superman Fortress Of Solitude tents, squirt guns, pinball machines, rubber bouncy balls and many other items depicting the character of Superman. Related non-toy items for children included tin lunchboxes, safety scissors, and other school supplies featuring the super hero.
