How to Make Big Strong Bubble Solution

Not all bubble solutions are created equal. While many off-the-shelf bubble solutions are adequate for casual bubble-making, few are suited for making big bubbles, and commercial bubble solutions designed for making big bubbles can be expensive. Bubble-makers have developed a variety of recipes for big bubble solutions, and you can create your own big bubble solution by combining distilled water, dish detergent, glycerin and, in some recipes, commercial bubble solution. You can scale each recipe to produce more or less bubble solution as long as you maintain each recipe's ingredient ratio.

Things You'll Need

  • Distilled water
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Commercial bubble solution
  • Glycerin, also known as glycerol
  • Mixing container, such as a bucket

Instructions

  1. Bubble Solution Recipe

    • 1

Measure just under 3 cups (700 ml) of distilled water with your measuring cup and pour the distilled water in your mixing container. Measure just over 1 1/4 cups (300 ml) of dish detergent with your measuring cup. Remember that you can add more or less of a given ingredient to change the properties of your bubble solution if your initial results are unsatisfactory.

    • 2

Slowly stir the water with your spoon and gently pour the dish detergent into the water. Continue to stir the solution until the dish detergent has thoroughly mixed with the water and excess foam has dissipated.

    • 3

Measure and pour just over 3 1/3 tbsp (50 ml) of glycerin into the bubble solution. Slowly stir the bubble solution until the glycerin has thoroughly mixed with the bubble solution.

    Alternative Solution Recipe

    • 4

Measure 1 1/2 gallons (24 cups or 5.7 liters) of distilled water with your measuring cup and pour the distilled water into your mixing container. Measure 1 1/4 cups (296 ml) of dish detergent with your measuring cup.

    • 5

Slowly stir the water with your mixing spoon and gently pour the dish detergent into the water. Continue to slowly stir the solution until the dish detergent has thoroughly mixed with the water and excess foam has dissipated.

    • 6

Measure and pour 6 tbsp (177 ml) of glycerin into the bubble solution. Slowly stir the bubble solution until the glycerin has thoroughly mixed with the bubble solution.

    • 7

Measure and pour 5 to 7 1/2 cups (1.2 to 1.8 liters) of commercial bubble solution into your home-made bubble solution. Slowly stir your home-made bubble solution until the commercial bubble solution has thoroughly mixed with your home-made bubble solution.
