How to Make a PVC Hula Hoop

The noveau cirque movement, popularized by acts such as Cirque du Soleil, focuses on human performers and their elaborate feats. As more people become interested in circus acts, even humble toys such as the hula hoop act as props for tricks. Hula hooping is popular among adults and kids alike. By making your own hoop out of PVC pipe, you can customize its look and feel.

Things You'll Need

  • 100 PSI 3/4-inch PVC irrigation tubing
  • 3/4-inch connector
  • PVC cutter
  • Duct tape
  • Hair dryer
  • Sand (optional)
  • Corn kernels (optional)
  • Brightly colored electrical tape (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the loose end of the PVC tube. Bend the tube into a circle with a diameter equal to the distance from the floor to your navel. Once your loop is the correct size, mark the tube with a small piece of duct tape.

    • 2

Cut the tube at the marked location. If you wish, pour the corn kernels into the tube to make it rattle or add sand for extra weight.

    • 3

Heat the ends of the tube with the hair dryer until they are flexible. Slide the connector into one end of the tube, and push the other end onto the connector to lock the ends in place. Secure the connection with duct tape.

    • 4

Decorate the hoop with bright electrical tape, if you desire. Stripes are a common pattern, as they create an interesting look when the hoop is in motion.
