Preparing to Fly Your Power Kite
Choose your kite. Keep in mind that large kites lift more and travel slower and small kites lift less and travel faster. Many people start with a 2-line trainer kite. Kites will work best with a small amount of wind.
Find a large, open space for your flying area that has a radius of at least 80 meters. Inspect the flying area and remove any rocks or sharp objects that could cause you to trip.
Prepare your gear and make sure everything is in good working condition. Wear appropriate clothing, shoes, head gear and sunglasses if needed.
Flying Your Power Kite
Launch your kite up and into an overhead neutral position. Test the kite and wind pull by flying the kite gently from side to side.
Climb onto your buggy, sand skiis or land-board (whatever type of flying you are doing).
Watch out for any obstacles as you begin steering the kite into a wide skid, which is a quick left-right maneuver putting pressure on your foot pegs. After skidding left, counter steer to the right to avoid spinning out and bring the kite overhead into neutral position. The movements of the turn of the buggy and kite should be synchronized for you to slow down safely.
To slow down or stop, skid out or do a wide skid by quickly turning left and right to bring your kite back into neutral position.
As you get comfortable with flying, you can lower the kite into the power zone to go faster. You may need to counter-steer to avoid tipping over.
