Marx Playset Instructions

During the middle of the 20th Century, one of the many products available on the childrens' toy market was the playset. Composed of a landscape, buildings and figurines, the playset was an all-in-one toy that often recreated specific historical or fictional events. One of the largest manufacturers of playsets in the 20th Century was Marx. Vintage Marx sets are sought after by collectors and can be set up by following some basic care and instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the top of the Marx playset box. Use extreme care, as the condition of even the packaging can affect the value of the playset.

    • 2

Remove any instructions from the box. Original instructions were often lost or discarded, so original Marx documentation can be valuable.

    • 3

Remove the figurines and set them aside. If you wish to arrange the figurines according to the theme of the playset, they were generally arranged according to color. All the "good guy" characters and all the "bad guy" characters are generally grouped in one color. Common colors include: red, ivory (cream), brown, tan, green, yellow, gray, blue and silver. Major characters from the western-themed playsets were most often cast in cream.

    • 4

Remove any buildings or environmental elements from the box. Older Marx playsets often had buildings with paper walls that can be set up by folding them at their hinges and setting them upright.

    • 5

Remove the playset mat from the box.

    • 6

Unfold the playset mat and lay it on an even surface. Marx playset mats will have many different kinds of landscapes and will indicate where buildings or objects should be placed.

    • 7

Place the buildings in the places indicated on the mat, if any are labeled.

    • 8

Assemble any buildings by following the playset's instructions or directions on the buildings themselves.

    • 9

Place the figurines and objects on the mat. Placement is up to the individual using the playset, but generally the playsets recreated battle scenes between two distinct sides.
