Swing Sets
Swing sets are a classic play structure enjoyed by just about every kid. A swing set can be as simple as a tire tied with rope to the branch of a tree. On the other hand, swing sets can also be elaborate play centers with swings, slides and see saws, monkey bars, gymnastic rings and a host of other devices. Wood, plastic or metal swing-set kits are available at toy stores and home improvement centers and can be easily installed at home. Craftier types can build their own swing sets from scratch using materials like cedar or even fiberglass. Swing sets are a great way to encourage your kids to get outside and get some exercise.
Tree Houses
Old fashioned tree houses were usually built by dads high up in the backyard tree and served as forts, clubhouses and lookouts. Sometimes they would be simple wooden platforms up in the branches of an old tree, and sometimes they would be complicated structures with trapdoors and built in furniture. Today's parents might not be so enthusiastic about installing a play structure that seems so likely to result in an accident or fall. Many parents build play houses for their kids at ground level. Kids love the idea of having their own small buildings and these houses are fantastic for games of make believe. You can turn an old shed into a playhouse by cleaning it, painting it and installing some small furniture and curtains over the windows.
Inflatable Structures
Inflatable structures are most often seen at carnivals and amusement parks. These inflatables are built of soft rubber membranes and filled with air or helium to give them the structure and strength needed for kids to get inside and jump and bounce. If your kid is having a special occasion like a birthday party, you can rent an inflatable structure for the day. If you have an especially big backyard, you can buy a small inflatable structure for about the same price as a swing set.
