How to Make an Outdoor Play Flag

Make your own colorful play flags versatile enough to use in a variety of outdoor games. No sewing machine is required to make customizable flags in a variety of designs. You can even affix letters to create monogrammed flags or flags with a child's name. Use your do-it-yourself flags for games such as flag football or capture the flag. Get creative with a variety of fabrics. Choose vinyl or outdoor canvas fabric for long-lasting durability.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a triangle-shaped pattern on your fabric and pin to the fabric using sewing pins.

    • 2

Cut out the fabric around the pattern.

    • 3

Apply no-sew, self-adhesive hem tape to all three of the flag's edges. Tuck the corners in against the tape before folding to create clean corners. Fold the flag's edges over the opposite way from the side with the hem tape in order to create a clean hem line with no visible edge and to prevent edges from fraying.

    • 4

Iron your flag to get out any wrinkles and create creases at the hem.

    • 5

Place no-sew seam adhesive on one edge of the triangle. Place the wooden dowel against the fabric just inside the adhesive strip, but on the opposite side of the strip. Dab some fabric adhesive on the fabric next to the dowel. Roll the fabric onto the dowel, securing the fabric together on the adhesive strip.
