Installing a Small Swimming Pool
Remove all the sod from the area where you want to install the pool. Removing sod means grass and the top layer of soil need to be shoveled off. Using a square shovel, you should be able to scrape up slices of sod without disturbing the underlying soil.
Level the area. Dig any high areas down to match the low areas. Trying to raise low areas to meet higher places can result in the pool sinking in those areas as the weight of the water compacts the soil beneath it.
Place leveling blocks. Most swimming pools will have support posts that hold the sides of the pool in place. Each support post should rest on a block. Typically the blocks are patio pavers or bricks sunk halfway into the underlying soil.
Place the base layer. Install 2 inches of fine sand, or sand and clay mix under the entire footprint of the pool. The sand acts as a barrier against anything sharp or bumpy under the pool, and provides protection against shifting caused by root growth or other slight environmental changes.
Install the pool walls. Following the pool manufacturer's guidelines, make sure that every post is positioned exactly straight up and down as you fasten the walls onto the posts. Making the posts straight will ensure that the liner will fit properly.
Install the liner. Try to make the liner as wrinkle-free as possible. This protects the liner and feels better under bare feet. Some wrinkles will ease out as water slowly fills the pool later in the process.
Assemble any remaining framework. Different manufacturers have different systems that hold the liner in place, or provide additional support. Follow the pool instructions to complete the final frame construction and decorative pieces before slowly filling the pool with water.
