How to Make Good & Easy Blowguns

A blowgun looks to be a simple weapon, but with the right ammunition it can be deadly. Blowguns are a primitive weapon used for hunting both large and small animals, using poison darts to pierce the skin and poison the animal. Recreationally, blowguns can be used to shoot paintballs. Blowguns aren't hard to use, but accuracy can be challenging, because using a blowgun involves blowing the object straight out of the end of the barrel with the force of your breath.

Things You'll Need

Measuring tape
Pencil
1/2-inch PVC pipe
PVC pipe cutter
Coarse-grade sandpaper
Rubber cement
Reed for a woodwind instrument
Foam rubber tubing
BB

Instructions

  Measure and mark a 6-to-8-inch length of PVC pipe with a pencil, and cut the section with the PVC cutter.

  Sand both ends of the cut-off pipe with sandpaper. This will keep objects inserted into the tube from catching on plastic as they exit at high speed.

  Place the reed into one end of the PVC pipe, and tape the reed to secure it and hold it in place. This reed will push the object out with more force by concentrating the air from your mouth that flows through it.

  Make a handle for the blowgun from the foam rubber tubing. This tubing will fit around the pipe. Cut the tubing between 4 and 6 inches long, depending on the size of your hand. Place the tubing over the pipe, positioning it a couple of inches away from the end where your mouth will be.

  Glue a BB a quarter-inch away from the end where objects will be exiting. The BB will serve as a point of focus for aiming, much as a regular rifle has a sight.
