How to Make a Portable Play Yard Tent

A portable play tent will allow your children to take camping trips right in your own backyard. The portable tent can also be stored easily, or even hauled to the wilderness for a camping trip with the family. A properly constructed portable tent will be lightweight and have the ability to repel water.

Instructions

  1. Make the frame

    • 1

Sand the ends of each of your pieces of PVC pipe and wipe them clean with a rag. Sand the inside of each end of the couplings, and wipe them clean too.

    • 2

Build 2 triangles of PVC. Lay out 3, 24-inch pieces of PVC in a triangle shape. Place a 45 degree by 90 degree 3-way coupling at each corner of the triangle with the 90 degree openings facing up. Paint the end of each piece of PVC with primer, coat the primer-covered ends with glue, and slide them into either side of the 45 degree openings on the coupling. Build the second triangle the same way. Allow 30 minutes for the glue to dry.

    • 3

Prime and glue the ends of the 60-inch pieces of PVC into the open, 90 degree ends of the couplings to complete the frame. Let the glue dry for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Fold the tarp in half to create a double-layered, 60 inch tarp. Tie the grommets on the tarp to the frame with baling twine, and wrap the tarp around the frame. Tie a long piece of baling twine to the the grommets on the opposite side of the tarp. Wrap the pieces of twine around the tent, and tie it to the grommets to complete your portable play tent.
