Goalrilla Vs. Mammoth Basketball Equipment

From the homemade milk-carton and plywood to tempered glass and steel, the home basketball hoop is a common sight in many American backyards and driveways. There are systems manufactured to fit most needs and budgets. At the high end, consumers are now able to purchase professional quality, fixed ground hoops and build all-weather courts.
  1. Types of Basketball Hoops

    • Basketball hoops come in a range of sizes and features to suit different needs. They range from wall-mounted hoops, which are fixed to a shed or garage, to portable systems, which use a water or sand filled base with wheels for smaller spaces, to professional quality fixed ground systems with tempered glass backboards. Fixed ground systems are sunken into a deep hole and surrounded with concrete. According to the Half Court Sports Website, the concrete not only provides stability, it also helps protect the interior of the pole against rust. Most hoops are able to be adjusted for height, either with a swing-arm or with a cam to aid the raising and lowering.

    Parts

    • The most basic elements of a basketball hoop is the rim, which is the horizontal ring the ball passes through, and the backboard, which is the wide, vertical surface set behind the rim. Backboards can be made from plywood, plastic/fiberglass, acrylic, or glass. They can vary in size and shape, from smaller boards with rounded sides, to the full size 72-inch rectangular board on professional hoops. The backboard and rim are then attached directly to a wall or are attached to a pole. The pole is then either set into the ground or is set on a movable base which is filled with sand or water. The backboard and rim are attached to the pole via extension arms which hold the back end of the board a few feet away from the pole. Most systems will also have a method or changing the height, either directly on the extension arms or on the pole itself.

    Mammoth Features

    • The Mammoth 72-inch basketball system features a 72-inch tempered glass backboard, which provides better bounce than fiberglass or wood. The rim is made of heavy duty steel and has a break-away system, which allows the rim to flex downward when dunked on. The extension arms hold the backboard 3 feet away from the pole and are made of welded steel. The pole is 6 inches in diameter and is made of one piece of steel. The height is adjustable at the pole with the Mammoth Rapid-Cam, which allows for fast, one-handed height adjustments.

    Goalrilla Features

    • The Goalrilla GS-1 is a fixed ground system with a 72-inch tempered glass backboard which provides 46 percent more bounce than acrylic, according to Goalrilla. The pole is 6-inch by 6-inch and is made of one piece steel. The rim is made of all steel parts with a heavy duty spring for flexibility and response. The extension arms hold the backboard 4 feet from the pole. A winch behind the main pole raises and lowers the backboard by angling the extension arms, accommodating heights from 7.5 to 10 feet.

    Comparison

    • Both the Mammoth and Goalrilla systems offer a solid rim and backboard with high quality materials and manufacturing. The Goalrilla GS-1 has the advantage of longer extension arms, which give the player an extra foot of space between the backboard and the pole. The systems for raising and lowering are both simple to use, but the Mammoth Rapid-Cam uses an easier motion and works more quickly than the Goalrilla.
