Instructions on Building a Balloon Powered Car

Making a balloon-powered car can be done by using some basic items from your home or local craft store. A balloon-powered car gets its initial power from the release of air stored up in a blown-up balloon. Set it on a smooth, slanted surface and there is no telling how far it will travel.

Things You'll Need

  • Large tissue box
  • Pointed scissors
  • Hole puncher
  • Transparent tape
  • Large balloon
  • 2 sets of toy axles with wheels

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a hole in the side of a rectangular-shaped tissue box using pointed scissors.

    • 2

Use the hole to start cutting the box in half lengthwise, removing the top part of the box that dispenses tissues. What you are left with will be used as the base of the car.

    • 3

Punch two holes into one of the long sides of the box using a hole puncher. Make sure the holes are near the bottom of the box and that each hole is close to one of the short sides.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 for the other side of the box, making sure the holes line up with the first two holes punched. This is where your axles will be inserted.

    • 5

Punch another hole exactly in the middle of one of the short sides of the box.

    • 6

Insert the neck of the balloon into this hole, making sure the body of the balloon is lying inside of the box.

    • 7

Cut four vertical slits from the top of the box to the first four punched holes. Slide the axles through the slits into the holes and tape up the slits.

    • 8

Align the wheels on each side of the car permanently by taping the edges of the box to the axles at the point where the holes meet the axles.

    • 9

Tape the balloon in place on the outside of the box where the balloon opening meets the box. Make sure air can enter the neck of the balloon when you blow into it.

    • 10

Fill up the balloon with air and tightly hold the opening to keep the air from escaping.

    • 11

Place the car on a smooth slanted surface and let go of the balloon.
