Homemade Toy Boats

Though you may have your own store-bought toy boat, sometimes those just aren't as fun as making your own. Making a toy boat with your child is a great activity, and she will have a blast playing with it in the bathtub or swimming pool. There are many toy boats you can build, with different levels of difficulty. Some may require adult supervision, while others are so easy your child won't need any help.
  1. Styrofoam

    • This is probably the simplest homemade toy boat. You will need a clean Styrofoam meat tray, such as the type in which ground beef is packaged, as well as a straw, construction paper, scissors and tape. Stick the straw into the center of the Styrofoam tray until it is securely standing upright. This will be the mast of your boat. Cut a triangle out of the construction paper and glue it to the straw as the sail of your boat. Test out a few different triangle sizes to find one that best balances with your boat. If it is too big, the boat will be too top heavy and may fall over during its maiden voyage.

    Popsicle Sticks

    • Create the base of your boat by making a platform out of Popsicle sticks. Lay one stick down in front of you so that it lays vertical to your body. Add a dab of glue at the end of another stick, placing it at the end of the vertical Popsicle stick at a 90-degree angle. Then, glue another stick on the other end of the Popsicle stick that is lying horizontal to your body. The two vertical sticks should be completely even with us. Line the sticks horizontally along the vertical sticks, forming a plank.
If you want to make a propeller for you boat, you can build it out of Popsicle sticks and a rubber band. Wrap a rubber band around the two sticks that make up the sides of the boat. Then, using a smaller Popsicle stick that has been cut in half, wrap the rubber band around the sticks as tightly as possible. When you place the boat in the water, the tension of the rubber band will cause the smaller stick to spin in the water when you flick it in the opposite way that it is wrapped.
