  Know where to shop. Toy stores, dollar stores and party stores often sell hula hoops.

  Decide which size is best for you. Child-size hula hoops have smaller diameters and do not give adults enough room to shake their hips.

  Examine the material. Most hula hoops are made of plastic, but some are covered in fabric or have small beads inside of them. If a hula hoop is not heavy enough, it will be difficult to use.
