Power Wheels Maintenance

Power Wheels by Fisher-Price are the next big step from Big Wheels and tricycles to motorized vehicles. With 6-volt or optional 12-volt batteries, they have enough power to get your kids going around the backyard or anywhere outside. Kids aren't well equipped to handle the maintenance required of motorized vehicles, so here are some handy tips to keep your Power Wheels in good operating order.
  1. Battery Maintenance

    • Charge your battery to full while the vehicle is off. This gets the maximum life and energy output from each battery. When you charge the batteries, make sure to inspect them for leakage, holes or warping. Any liquid oozing from or melting off the battery is serious and requires battery replacement. A leaking battery is dangerous, poisonous and will destroy the vehicle.

    Motor Maintenance

    • The single and double motors found on all Power Wheels are completely enclosed and should not be opened as it invalidates the one-year factory warranty. During charging or if there is a problem with speed, you can flip the vehicle upside-down and inspect the undercarriage. The wheels and axles tend to collect dirt and mud as well as toys, string and wire. Remove these carefully, trying not to scrape or damage the axles or tires.

    Break Maintenance

    • The power brake, which is standard on all models, is the only piece of equipment that Fisher-Price recommends oiling. Place 1 to 2 drops of 5W oil directly on the bolt attaching the brake to the body of the vehicle. It will seep down and coat the brake, ensuring smooth operation. Depending on use and climate, do this approximately once a month.
