What Is a Trampoline Made From?

Trampolines have been used as backyard fun for years. These outdoor toys did not originate as a form of child's play until the late twentieth century. Trampolines are generally a piece of strong fabric that is pulled tight over a steel frame that allows you to bounce. The fabric itself does not give, instead the fabric is held tight by springs that allow the fabric to give as you bounce.
  1. History

    • The earliest trampoline-like contraptions are said to have been made of walrus skin. The Inuit people, people in the Arctic regions, would bounce each other in the air on these skins. Europeans would also do something similar by tossing each other on a blanket. In the early 1900's, trapeze artists would use an item called a bouncing bed underneath the trapeze to catch them when they fell. George Nissen and Larry Griswold were the ones credited with building the first official trampoline in 1934.

    Construction

    • Competition trampolines, or those used in professional gyms, are made of strong steel or galvanized metal. The springs are also made of galvanized steel which is strong and sturdy. The mat is usually a canvas material that can withhold stress. It is usually waterproof and mesh. Typically mats are placed on top of the springs in case the tumbler lands on the springs. Unprotected springs can pinch and be a hazard to the user. Trampolines that are used at home are not as durable but are still built with protection in mind.

    Size

    • Trampolines sold for home use usually have a perimeter of 10 to 14 feet. Professional trampolines are usually rectangular and are 7' x 14', 6' x 12' and 5' x 10'. Trampolines are also made in octagonal form and are generally 14 feet around. Small rebounder trampolines are used in exercise and are usually about 2' x 2'.

    Uses

    • In addition to backyard play, trampolines are used in aeronautic training. They are also used in Slamball. Slamball is a contact sport, similar to the game of basketball but used with trampolines. Gymnasts and other athletes use trampolines for competitive sports. Mini-trampolines are usually used in exercise and training. They provide a low-impact exercise that can strengthen and tone.

    Safety

    • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the trampoline continues to remain the most dangerous of outside toys. The group has been trying to ban trampolines from being sold to families. Over half of all trampoline injuries result in leg or ankle sprains. Much care and supervision should be given while using trampolines. While they can be a lot of fun, they can also be very dangerous.
