How to Make a Rubber Band Gun Using a Lazer Tag Gun

You may remember the old '80s Lazer Tag game. We all had the vests, we all had the guns, and then technology marched on. What do you do with the stuff when you're done with it? Recycle them into new games, with the same concept. The best games to play with a gun are games where it is still used as a gun. But not just any gun, one that can shoot projectiles instead of lasers--projectiles such as rubber bands.

Things You'll Need

  • Original Lazer Tag gun Burning stove or fire Metal knife with a nonmetal handle ½-inch auger or metal tubing Small dowel (1/2 inch long, 1/8 inch diameter) Rubber bands (wide ones work the best) Super Glue

Instructions

    • 1

Heat a knife over the fire till red hot. While heating, pick a spot in the very front of the "barrel" of the Lazer Tag gun to make an incision. The incision should be just below the top of the gun. Mark the exact spot with a pen or pencil.

    • 2

Cut a small 1/16-inch incision into the plastic of the Lazer Tag gun where you made your mark. The incision should be done at a slight angle down. If you aim for the bottom of the butt of the gun, you should be at the correct angle. Replace the knife on the fire.

    • 3

Cut a small incision into the back of the gun where there is a natural drop. The piece of the gun looks very much like a cliff--elongate the cliff slightly. Draw the knife straight down. This will make the "ledge" a definite corner.

    • 4

Heat the auger over the fire till red hot. While the auger is heating, look at the trigger housing and mark a spot in the direct center. Make a ¼-inch hole at the spot of your mark. Trace the dowel circumference on the spot for a perfect fit. Place the auger back into the fire.

    • 5

Put the auger into the hole just till you get to the bottom and heat the plastic just slightly. Place a small amount of Super Glue on the dowel. Push the dowel into the hole, and hold it in the hole. If the dowel is a little too small, fill the rest with glue.

    • 6

Place a rubber band in the notch in the front of the gun. Press both sides of the bands together. Pull it towards the back and to the right of the gun. Wrap it around the ledge and bring it down the length of the gun and into the trigger housing. Hook the rubber band onto the dowel. When you're ready to shoot, push the band off the dowel and it will shoot straight to anywhere you want.
