How to Make Hemp-Covered Hula Hoops

Hula hoops date back to 1000 B.C., when Egyptian children played games with dried grapevines formed into large hoops. They were reintroduced into the modern-day market in 1957 by an Australian company. It has been estimated that the ecologically and durable fiber hemp has been used since 8000 B.C. You can combine the histories of these items by making a hemp-covered hula hoop at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the size of your hoop. Measure the diameter (the width) of the circle you would like to create, and then multiply this number by pi or about 3.14. Cut your irrigation tubing using a ratcheting PVC cutter, or a saw to this length.

    • 2

Heat the tube ends with a hair dryer until they are pliable and insert the connector to connect the two ends. If you cannot insert the connector, heat the ends more until you can.

    • 3

Wrap hemp tape around the outside of the hula hoop.
