How to Buy a Used Jungle Gym

A jungle gym can be a source of exercise and fun for children. They are available constructed of steel or wood in a variety of designs. Safety is the most important thing to keep in mind when buying a used jungle gym.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the welds on a steel jungle gym. The strength of the weld determines the stability of the equipment. A weak weld cracks over time, allowing rust and corrosion to enter and further weaken the joint. Make sure there aren't any sharp metal edges or open ended pipes. Steel playground equipment requires regular maintenance, repair and painting to last over time.

    • 2

Consider the need to anchor the jungle gym once you get it home. Look for anchor points on the legs or determine that there's a way to install them. Serious injury can occur when a jungle gym full of kids topples over.

    • 3

Measure the distance between the rungs, which should be as least 9 1/2 inches apart. Upright bars should be at least 3 1/2 inches apart, so a child can't get his head stuck between them.

    • 4

Look for properly maintained wood. Sanding rough spots and sealing the wood prevents splinters and protects it from the damaging effects the elements. If maintained on a regular basis, a good wooden jungle gym can last for years.

    • 5

Shake the jungle gym to see if it's sturdy and well-built. Examine the bolts holding it together. If they're loose, make sure you can tighten them. They shouldn't be sticking outwards, where they can stick a child in the eye or cut their skin.
