How to Make Accessories for a Barbie Doll House

One of the joys of childhood is playing with a Barbie dollhouse. It̵7;s not as much fun, though, if the dollhouse is bare. Fortunately, you can make your own dollhouse accessories to provide hours of fun at a fraction of the cost, and you can customize them in any way you choose. Model your homemade accessories after your own furnishings, and scale them to Barbie̵7;s size using the 1-to-6 playscale ratio, meaning that 1 foot in real size equals 2 inches in Barbie size.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a couch shape from a piece of foam or a foam block. Cut a piece of scrap fabric large enough to cover the couch, then spray the foam with spray adhesive and press the fabric to the foam. Repeat the process for a love seat or recliner.

    • 2

Trim craft sticks with scissors and glue them together with a hot-glue gun to make a kitchen table. Lay two or three sticks next to each other, depending on how wide you want to make the tabletop. Trim two sticks to match the width of the tabletop, and glue one stick vertically across each end of the sticks to hold the tabletop together, and let dry. Glue one stick upright in the center of each vertical stick to make the base. Let dry, and then place a line of glue on the top edge of the upright sticks. Center another craft stick, trimmed to the length of the tabletop, over the two upright sticks and press down to attach.

Cut the lid off of an empty tea-bag box to make a bathtub. Cut the top edge of each corner ¼-inch deep and fold each side down. Paint the box with white craft paint, and let dry. Cut an inch-long piece out of the accordion-like part of a flexible plastic straw, and then glue it with craft glue to one of the flaps for a faucet. Glue beads on either side of the faucet for faucet handles.

    • 4

Cut a rectangle out of a piece of cardboard, and fold each side down 1 inch. Tape the folded corners, creating a bed frame. Cut a headboard out of a piece of cardboard, and then paint the headboard and frame with craft paint, or cover with a piece of fabric attached with spray adhesive. Cut a piece of foam block for the mattress, spray with adhesive and cover with a piece of fabric.

    • 5

Place a bead of glue from a hot-glue gun on the inside of a toothpaste tube lid, in the center. Stick a toothpick into the glue and let dry. Place a bead of hot glue in the center of a penny, and then stick the other end of the toothpick into the glue to make a lamp.

    • 6

Make throw pillows by gluing small pieces of fabric around cotton balls with craft glue.

    • 7

Stick stamps or stickers on the walls and outline with a black or brown marker to create wall décor.

    • 8

Make throw rugs by cutting pieces of felt or fabric and snipping the edges with scissors, creating fringe.

    • 9

Cut two rectangles of fabric for curtains, and then snip small holes, evenly spaced, ¼ inch from the top edge. Thread a pipe cleaner through the holes, bend the edges of the pipe cleaner to resemble a curtain rod, and then glue to the wall.

    • 10

Create a laptop by cutting out a small rectangle of cardboard. Paint it black, let it dry, and then fold it in half. Glue a small piece of aluminum foil to the top half for the screen.

    • 11

Create a console television by painting an individual-size cereal box black or brown. Let it dry, and then glue a rectangle of aluminum foil to the front. Use a flat piece of cardboard instead of a box to make a flat-screen television.
