How to Restore a Barbie's Hair by Dyeing

Barbie has been a popular children's doll since its debut in 1959. Although Barbie comes out of the packaging with perfect hair, years of play and sometimes being forgotten in children's toy chests can distress Barbie's hair. You may be tempted to simply replace a worn-out Barbie, but there's no reason to spend the extra money when you can restore her to like-new condition by dyeing Barbie's synthetic hair. You can dye her hair the original blond color, make Barbie a brunette, or give her a funky look with a bright color like pink or green.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and condition Barbie's hair with your regular hair care products, following the same routine you use for your own hair.

    • 2

Comb out any tangles with a fine-tooth comb while the hair is still wet and freshly conditioned.

    • 3

Lay out a piece of plastic on your work surface to protect it from the dye. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.

    • 4

Lay the Barbie doll flat on the work surface and apply a piece of transparent tape along the hairline to prevent her face from getting dyed.

    • 5

Prepare the Rit dye solution in a small bowl by mixing 2 tablespoons of Rit liquid dye with 1/2 cup of hot top water. Rit dye is available in a wide range of colors, making it easy to give Barbie a custom look.

    • 6

Dip a corner of a clean rag or sponge into the hot dye solution and squeeze out the excess dye.

    • 7

Rub the dye onto Barbie's hair with long strokes from the root to the ends. Dip your cloth in the dye as needed.

    • 8

Apply the dye with the cloth or sponge to all of the hair until you are satisfied with the amount of coverage. Apply a small amount of dye for a slight color change or completely saturate the hair for darker dye results.

    • 9

Let the dye set for 10 to 20 minutes to achieve your desired results.

    • 10

Rinse the hair under cool running water until the water runs clear.

    • 11

Shampoo and condition the hair a second time, if desired. Set on a clean towel or paper towels to dry.
