Barbies from the '70s

Barbie has certainly come a long way since 1959. Since the late 1950s, Barbie has made a lot of changes in her appearance, hairstyles, clothing and even careers. Several modifications came to Barbie in the 1970s when she physically started to change in her facial appearance, as well as her body.
  1. Living Barbie

    • Living Barbie first appeared in 1970. She featured body parts, like the head, legs, waist and arms, that turned and moved. Barbie's elbows, ankles and knees were bendable.

    Malibu Barbie

    • Malibu Barbie appeared in 1971, and her face showed a slight change--earlier Barbies' eyes glanced to the side, giving them a seductive, mysterious look. In 1971, Barbie looked straight forward--a little less seductive and little more friendly.

    Talking Busy Barbie

    • The first communicating Barbie hit the market in 1972. Talking Busy Barbie spoke when a string in her back was pulled. She was also the first Barbie to have separated fingers.

Quick Curl Barbie and Mod Hair Ken

    • Quick Curl Barbie allowed little girls to play hairdresser when she debuted in 1973. She had hair that would stay in a certain style whether you brushed it under, flipped it up or curled it with the Barbie curler accessory. Mod Hair Ken was also introduced in the same year. You could choose between a straight- or a curly-haired Ken, and he came with removable mustaches, sideburns and a beard.

    Barbie Get-Ups 'N Go

    • Barbie Get-Ups 'N Go marked an era of the working Barbie in 1975. You could purchase Barbie in different careers, including a flight attendant or a doctor. Barbie Olympic, a gold-medal winning skier, figure skater and gymnast, also debuted that same year.

    Ballerina Barbie

    • Ballerina Barbie first appeared in 1976. She wore a white tutu with gold accents around the tulle outfit. She came with ballet shoes, a wand and a crown to wear over her blonde ponytail.

    SuperStar Barbie

    • SuperStar Barbie appeared in 1977 and introduced a new change to Barbies. She was the first Barbie to have a white, open-mouthed smile, a new head and face shape and very long, voluminous blonde hair. SuperStar Barbie also featured pierced ears.

    Pretty Changes Barbie

    • Pretty Changes Barbie came out on the market in 1979. She came with different wigs that allowed you to change her hair from a short-short blonde look, to long blond curls, to a shoulder-length brunette bob.
