Vintage Barbie
Vintage Barbie includes the dolls sold between 1959 and 1975. The earliest dolls came with a basic swimsuit and a pair of shoes. Later editions were sold with a complete outfit appropriate for the era. One doll included a swim cap and wigs in three different colors. The first edition Barbies wore their hair in ponytails, but later editions had hair anywhere from her shoulder to her waist and in a variety of colors.
Holiday Barbie
Special holiday Barbie dolls are sold each year. The tradition dates back to 1988; 2008 marked the 20-year anniversary of the holiday series. A special collection called the Happy Holiday Barbie Doll ran for 10 years. Mattel has created a special Barbie doll each year since, but the latter dolls haven't connected to a specific collection other than the holiday theme. Barbie ornaments are available each year through Hallmark.
Happy Family Barbie
The Happy Family collection is available in several different sets. Most are still available new, but prices have increased from the original purchase price. The core family comes with a mom, a dad, a brother and a sister. These can be purchased in sets of mother and baby daughter or father and toddler son. A grandfather and grandmother are also available for this series. The grandparents have their own home and accessories. Clothing sets are available for each family member. You can add a shopping set and a first birthday playset to this collection, too.
Occupation Barbie
Barbie has come a long way from a stand-alone beauty to a modern career woman. Doctor Barbie has been sold as a newborn doctor, a family doctor and a veterinarian. Doctor Barbie typically comes with a set of newborn twins and a variety of medical supplies, while veterinarian Barbie includes a small pony or a collection of small animals and a variety of caretaking supplies. Barbie has also been sold as a dentist, a police officer, a pilot and even as a U.S. Marine.
Collectible Barbies
Collectible Barbie's vary in price and availability. When limited editions are released, they may quickly become hard to find. Other editions are released in larger batches, but might only be sold for a certain amount of time. The condition of the Barbie will go a long way in determining the price of the doll.
