Creation
The Barbie doll was created by Ruth Handler, one of the founders of the Mattel Toy Co. Handler came up with the idea while watching her daughter playing with teenage paper dolls. The Handlers named the doll after their daughter.
The First
The first Barbie doll wore a black and white striped, one-piece swimsuit, high heeled-sandals and a blond ponytail. There was also a line of clothing available.
A Boyfriend
Barbie's boyfriend, Ken (named after the Handlers' son) was introduced in 1961. The first version had flocked hair, which was replaced by painted hair because the flocking rubbed off.

Barbie has had many careers in her history. She has been a fashion model, business executive, nurse, astronaut, doctor, Olympic gold medalist, Army Ranger, teacher and presidential candidate.
