Kinds of Rubber Ducks

Rubber ducks have adorned bathtubs since the beginning of rubber manufacturing in the 19th century. While always beloved, rubber ducks did not assume their current cultural popularity until 1970 when Ernie's "Rubber Duckie" from "Sesame Street" became a mainstream hit, reaching 16 on the Billboard Top 40. Since then, rubber ducks have become iconic pieces of childhood Americana to be collected, raced and revised into hundreds of varieties.
  1. Classic

    • The classic rubber duck is still very popular. All classic ducks are yellow with the familiar duck shape and actually float and squeak, though they are more likely to be made from vinyl than rubber. Within this theme are many variations: some are very small, some are larger, some have orange bills, some yellow. Eyes also come in many variations: some more modern ducks have cartoon-like eyes with color and lashes, while many older ones have black dots.

    Theme

    • Themed ducks come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Mean looking devil ducks with black or red horns on their heads are some of the most popular. Holiday ducks dressed like Easter bunnies, leprechauns, Santas, turkeys and more are also popular, as are ducks marking occasions like gradations or births. Ducks can also come with artistic designs, shaped like different animals, or embodying different themes, like royal, punk, sports and sleepy ducks.

    Specialty

    • All sorts of colors and themes of rubber duck now have light emitting diodes in them that go through a set pattern of lights and colors as they float, making them perfect for nights in the hot tub or as conversation pieces for a party. Racing ducks are aerodynamically designed and specially weighted to ensure they won't tip over. Many companies offer custom made ducks to fit any occasion.

    Celebrity

    • Celebrity ducks are rubber ducks in name only featuring likenesses of celebrities and classic characters contorted into duck shape. Since they are made with collectors in mind some are made from porcelain or ceramic and so do not float. Politicians such as Barack Obama, icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson, and classic characters such as the Wizard of Oz ensemble can now all be found artistically rendered in rubber duck form.
