How to Make Brushes Finer

Applying makeup is easier when you have brushes of the right textures, shapes and sizes. When you can't find just the right brush, sometimes you need to improvise by customizing your brushes yourself. For example, making your brushes finer helps them glide over your face much more softly for adding accents of blush, shimmer or face powder in areas that need them without scraping a heavy bristle across your skin. Knowing how to make your brushes finer only takes a few minutes of work and is more than worth it when you need a quick fix for an easy application.

Things You'll Need

Makeup brush
Tweezers
Course scrubby brush
Hair conditioner
Towel
Blow dryer

Instructions

  Grasp the makeup brush firmly in one hand with the bristles pointing upward.

  Pluck two or three bristles at a time with the tweezers. Remove approximately 25 to 50 of the thin bristly hairs. This removes some of the density of the brush, lending to a finer applicator.

  Rub a quarter-sized amount of hair conditioning cream into the remaining bristles of the brush. Do this with your thumb and forefinger, massaging it in for up to two minutes.

  Rinse the brush thoroughly with hot water.

  Brush a dry towel firmly and briskly with the wet bristles. Hold a hair dryer about 6 inches from the bristles as you do this. This dries the bristles and softens them as you wear them down with the towel. Do this for two minutes or until the bristles are entirely dry.
