How to Make a Toy Boat Out of Foam Sheets

Toy boats give children the opportunity to sail in their own bathtub or paddling pool. Toy sailboats feature prominently in paintings of royal children. Toy boats appear in the tombs of royal children as early as 3100 BC. Virtually any floating object has the potential to become a toy boat. Carved wood, cork, paper, even large leaves give children the chance to create their own flotilla. The manufacture of synthetic foam gives children new material for toy boats.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a 4-inch-by-6-inch rectangle in the foam. Mark the measurements. Use a ruler to make straight lines on the foam, outlining the rectangle.

    • 2

Cut the foam with a serrated knife. Scissors are difficult to control in the thick foam and leave a ragged edge

    • 3

Insert the knife in the center of the foam rectangle. Cut a small hole for the mast.

    • 4

Cut a 5-inch equilateral triangle out of the white craft foam. Cut a half-inch slit 1 inch from the top and 1 inch from the bottom.

    • 5

Slide the straw through the two slits in the sail. Secure the sail near the top of the straw with hot glue.

    • 6

Insert the bottom of the straw into the hole in the center of the foam boat.
