How to Make a Toy Steam Boat

Making a toy steam boat doesn't have to be a complicated or difficult task. One way to make this toy is to use simple materials, such as sponges, which float and are easy to work with. Be as detailed as you want in adding decorations to your boat or just cut the sponges into a steam boat shape and leave them undecorated for the simplest approach.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the shape of the bottom of a steam boat onto a large sponge. The typical shape is rectangular with one side rounded off. Use a permanent marker to draw on the sponge.

    • 2

Cut out the bottom shape of the steam boat with a pair of scissors. Help children with this step to avoid injury.

    • 3

Draw a smoke-stack shape onto a smaller sponge with a permanent marker. Make the smoke-stack shape rectangular, with about 1/4 of one end slightly wider than the rest of the rectangle. This is the top of the smoke stack.

    • 4

Cut out the smoke stack from the smaller sponge with the scissors.

    • 5

Attach the smoke stack vertically to the bottom shape of the boat with rubber cement. Let the glue dry for at least 15 minutes before playing with the boat.

    • 6

Draw decorations such as windows, an anchor or whatever you like onto the toy steam boat using permanent markers.
