How do I Make a Home Toy Boat?

Making a toy boat at home is a great activity for older and young children. Preschoolers will need the help of an adult, but will enjoy the building process and floating the boat in a pond or bathtub. This sailboat construction is a perfect summer beach activity, as the boat is made from driftwood. A search for the perfect driftwood boat pieces can be a fun process in itself and the finished boat will be a memento of a beach-side adventure.

Things You'll Need

  • Two flat pieces of driftwood, approximately 5-by-12 inches
  • Twig
  • Soft brush
  • Epoxy glue
  • Plastic bowl
  • Plastic knife
  • Tissue paper, two different colors
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the driftwood and the twig thoroughly with the soft brush.

    • 2

Mix the two parts of epoxy glue together in a plastic bowl.

    • 3

Glue the two pieces of driftwood together, one on top of the other lengthwise, using the plastic knife to spread the glue.

    • 4

Glue the twig on the top piece of driftwood, standing straight up on the twig's end, in the center of the piece of driftwood.

    • 5

Cut out two large triangles of tissue paper the height of the twig. Glue each triangle to either side of the twig.
