How to Replace Pedals on a Huffy Kid's Bike

Pedals direct power from your legs to the bicycle's drive train. Without them, the bicycle relies largely on gravity to propel it along. A Huffy kid's bike contains a standard pair of bicycle pedals. Replacing these pedals begins with knowing which way each pedal threads into the bicycle's crank arm. Preparing the threads properly eases installation of the pedals and prevents the pedal and crank arm from chemically bonding with one another.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Removal

    • 1

Lower the kickstand to stand the bike upright. If there is not kickstand, cover one side of the bicycle with a towel and lean that side against the wall.

    • 2

Select either pedal to loosen first. Depending on the pedal chosen, look for an ̶0;L̶1; or ̶0;R̶1; printed on the pedal. The left pedal (L) has left-threads. The right pedal (R) has right-threads.

    • 3

Tighten an adjustable wrench onto the spindle portion of the pedal, between the pedal's platform and the side of the bike.

    • 4

Turn the wrench in the appropriate direction. For pedals marked ̶0;L̶1; rotate the wrench clockwise. For pedals marked ̶0;R̶1; turn the wrench counterclockwise. To steady the pedal during loosening, hold the opposite pedal still.

    • 5

Loosen each pedal sufficiently before removing it by hand.

    Installation

    • 6

Rub grease thoroughly into the mounting threads of each new pedal.

    • 7

Select either pedal to install first. If selecting the pedal marked ̶0;R̶1; install the pedal on the right side of the bicycle. If choosing the pedal marked ̶0;L̶1; attach the pedal to the left side of the bike.

    • 8

Thread the end of the pedal into the crank arm. Remember, pedals marked ̶0;R̶1; turn clockwise to tighten. Pedal marked ̶0;L̶1; turn counterclockwise to tighten.

    • 9

Tighten both pedals thoroughly using your adjustable wrench. As with loosening the pedal, hold the opposite pedal still during tightening.
