How to Install Saris Bones

Saris Bones is a bumper-supported bike rack. Bones has adjustable legs and straps that allow it to attach securely to the rear bumper of cars and trucks of nearly any size. There are two models, Bones 2-Bike and Bones 3-Bike, with similar methods of installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the car's rear window and bumper prior to installing the Bones bike rack to reduce slippage.

    • 2

Loosen the locking knob on the rear leg (the single leg projecting from the center), remove the leg from its cylinder and adjust its position so it will rest against the rear window when the bumper legs rest on the bumpers. Place the leg back in the cylinder and tighten the locking knob (do not over-tighten).

    • 3

Position the rack's arms (parts that will hold the bicycles) by loosening their knobs and adjusting their orientation so that they project horizontally from the cylinder when the rack is on the car. Make sure the tips of the arms are higher than the base. Tighten the knobs when finished.

    • 4

Attach the two upper S-hooks to a hinge line on the car's trunk or frame. For coupes and sedans, the S-hooks will attach to the hinge of the trunk nearest the rear window. For trucks and wagons, the S-hooks will attach to the upper hinge of the rear frame.

    • 5

Attach the two lateral S-hooks to the hinge line on either side of the car's trunk. Attach the two lower S-hooks to the hinge line on the bottom of the car's trunk, near the bumper.

    • 6

Use each hook's thread to tighten the strap so that the rack is securely mounted with as little play as possible. Tie off the loose ends of the straps so that they do not flap around while the car is in motion.
