DIY Push Bikes

A push bike is one of the best things parents can use to teach their child to ride a bike. Even before training wheels, a push bike can be used to push a child along and allow him to get a good idea of how it feels to ride a real bicycle. If choose to not purchase a push bike, you can make one yourself in a simple series of steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Tricycle
  • Broom handle
  • Drill
  • Duct Tape
  • Tape measure
  • Child bike helmet

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew a broom's handle from the bristle portion. Make sure the handle is sturdy and you can get a good grip on it. There are alternatives to a broom handle -- for example, painter poles will work as well.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the handle you will be using. The best way to get a good measurement is with a tape measure. Trace a circular hole with the same circumference on the back step of the tricycle.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the circle in the back step. Keep in mind that it is better to start small, leaving you the option of later making the hole larger if necessary.

    • 4

Push the pole through the hole you have drilled. Make sure the hole enters at a 45-degree angle; this will hold it in place better and make the "bike" easier to push along.

    • 5

Wrap duct tape around the base of the pole on the top and bottom of the step. Even though inserting it at a 45-degree angle will help hold the pole in place, the duct tape will hold it more securely.

    • 6

Grip the pole with one or two hands and push your child around on your newly made push bike. Make sure your child wears his or her helmet for safety.
