How to protect and maintain a steel bicycle frame

Despite the growing availability of aluminum and titanium bicycle frames, steel bicycle frames have a strong and loyal following among serious bikers, and for good reason. Steel frames can take abuse that other materials cannot endure. Many cyclists who ride steel also prefer the quality of ride that steel frames deliver. Despite their advantages, steel frames do require extra care to protect them from rust. It is best to take steps to protect your steel frame immediately after you purchase it.

Instructions

    • 1

Coat the insides of the bicycle frame tubes with JP Weigle's Frame Saver. This is a sticky, rust-preventing substance in an aerosol can which you spray into the frame. Applying Frame Saver is easiest before any components have been attached to a new bike frame. Follow the directions on the can carefully.

    • 2

Apply a light coat of grease to the frame's bottom bracket threads, the ends of the head tube, and the seatpost collar where the clamp splits. Bike grease is an effective moisture barrier. The seatpost in particular is water's primary entrance point into the frame.

    • 3

Polish the bike frame regularly with a silicone-based polish to protect the paint job. Paint is the main line of defense against rust on the outside of the frame. Check the frame regularly for chips and dings, and brush them with clear nail polish before rust can begin to form.

    • 4

Apply frame tape where cables and other components rub the frame to prevent paint damage or loss.
