How to Change the Rims on a Bicycle

Customizing your bike to suit specific riding needs, such as ramp-jumping, BMX-style riding or mountain biking, can require modifications for tires, rims and shock springs. Most bike outlets have these accessories for sale. Changing a bicycle rim is a basic process and requires a few tools.

Instructions

  1. Rear rim

    • 1

Remove the chain guard by unscrewing any bolts holding it in place. All models vary slightly with bolt and screw placement.

    • 2

Take off the nut holding the chain cog, and remove the chain. This is on the rear axle of the bicycle, usually on the right side.

    • 3

Remove the nut on the opposite side of the axle, and slide the wheel out of the bike frame. If the bike has a rear brake, it must be loosened to remove the wheel.

    • 4

Slide the new rim and tire onto the bike, and reverse the above process to put the wheel assembly back together.

    Front rim

    • 5

Remove the axle nuts from both sides of the front axle. If there is a front brake, loosen or remove it.

    • 6

Slide the front rim off of the bike frame, and set it aside. The front rim is independent from any chain mechanics.

    • 7

Slide the new rim and tire onto the frame, and replace the axle nuts. Tighten them securely with an appropriate wrench.
