Origin
In 1924, Horace M. Huffman started the Huffman Manufacturing Company in Dayton, Ohio to manufacture products for service stations.
Bicycles
The company began manufacturing bicycles in 1934. In the midst of the Great Depression, Huffman believed people would welcome a cheaper form of transportation.
Production
At first workers produced 12 bicycles a day, but by 1936 daily production had increased to 200.
New Generation
Horace M. "Huff" Huffman, Jr. joined the company in 1936 and introduced new manufacturing techniques that increased production to meet escalating demand within four years.
Diversification
Huffman added a lawnmower division in 1949 to help offset the effects of the post World War II recession. The division was sold in the late 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, the company acquired and sold manufacturers of car seats, strollers and garden tools.
Marketing
In the late 1970s. Huffman decided to focus on children's bikes and officially changed its name to the Huffy Corporation. The company also produces BMX and racing bicycles.
