How to Make a Bicycle Trailer

A trailer that attaches to the back of your bicycle can come in handy when you need to haul more than a handlebar basket can hold. If you need a bicycle trailer only occasionally, you can build this version that easily breaks back down to a kick scooter and a plastic sled.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheels of a child's kick scooter by loosening the bolts that attach the wheels to the frame.

    • 2

Draw a line lengthwise down the center of a metal bar that measures 1 to 2 inches wide. Drill one hole at either end of the bar 1/2 inch in from the ends on the center line, and drill another hole at both ends about 1 1/2 inches closer to the middle of the bar along the same center line.

    • 3

Lay the bar flat and bend the ends up at a point 1 inch toward the middle from the inside hole until the bar is U-shaped. The ends should be perpendicular to the floor with the holes facing each other.

    • 4

Attach a piece of wood between the upright sections of the bar and secure it with screws at the lower holes on either end. Place one end of a rectangular piece of wood that measures about 1-foot long at the middle of the underside of the metal bar and reinforce it with a smaller rectangular piece of wood, about 6-inches long, that reaches from the cross-section piece of wood to the larger piece attached to the underside of the bar.

    • 5

Connect the wheels to your bicycle trailer at the remaining holes in the metal bar, one on each side, and keep the wheels in place with the bolts from the kick scooter. Turn the trailer over so the wheels rest on the ground, supporting the apparatus.

    • 6

Place a thin, flat piece of scrap wood onto the longer piece of wood connected to the metal bar. Use duct tape to strap this scrap piece to a plastic sled that rests on top of the metal bar. Tape the sled in a total of three places to include two attachments toward either end of the metal bar.
