How to Replace a Bicycle Tire Tube

Replace a bicycle tire instead of patching it when you have a flat tire. Use a patch for short-term repairs just to get you through until you can replace the tube. Replacing a bicycle tube is easy and can be done by teenagers or adults.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the sides of the tire out of the wheel rim. Remove the old tire and discard it.

    • 2

Pump a small amount of air into the new tire. Add just enough air to give the tire shape and to make it easier to work with.

    • 3

Line the stem of the tire up with the stem hole on the bicycle rim. Insert the stem half way into the rim, pushing firmly if necessary.

    • 4

Feed the tube around the bicycle rim until the entire tube is in place.

    • 5

Lay the wheel on a flat surface. Insert one entire side of the tire into the rim. Work the opposite side of the tire until it is in place, and the tire beading is inside the rim. Do not use a tire lever to insert the last bit, use your hands.

    • 6

Wiggle the valve with your fingers and pull it into place. Partially inflate the tire with a bicycle pump or air compressor.

    • 7

Inspect the tire. Look for bulges or areas where the tire is coming away from the rim. Adjust the tube and tire as necessary. Fill the tire completely after any problem areas are corrected.
