How to Install a Bike Kickstand

Many bikes don't include a kickstand, but a kickstand is handy especially on a child's bike. If you purchased a kickstand separately, you can install it yourself. Different types of kickstands are installed in different ways. Make sure you purchase the correct kickstand size or get one that adjusts to the correct size. Read on to learn how to install a bike kickstand.

Instructions

  1. Under-Mount Kickstand

    • 1

Remove all the parts from the bag. Separate the nut and plate from the kickstand, if necessary.

    • 2

      Turn the bike upside-down.

    • 3

Place the kickstand on the bottom of the frame just behind the pedals so the bolt extends through the frame.

    • 4

Slide the plate over the bolt so the frame is clamped. Thread the nut onto the bolt. Tighten the nut by hand then tighten all the way with the appropriate socket.

    • 5

Flip the bike right side up and check that the kickstand properly balances the bike.

    Rear-Mount Kickstand

    • 6

Place the main clamp of the kickstand against the chainstay. Loosely attach the bolts provided. The chainstay is the part of the frame that runs from the rear axle to where the pedal cranks revolve.

    • 7

Screw the adjustable seatstay arm to the kickstand. The seatstay is the part of the frame that runs from the rear axle to the seat.

    • 8

Slide the kickstand along the chainstay until the adjustable arm is positioned on the seatstay. Tighten all bolts used so far.

    • 9

Attach the clamp into the slot on the adjustable arm, insert the bolts and tighten.

    • 10

Put the bike upright to check that it balances properly on the kickstand. In some instances, the length of the kickstand may need to be cut or adjusted.
