Instructions
Start early. Take children cycling when they're old enough to sit up without help and control their head. Starting early will plant the seeds of excitement in your kids.
Buy a tow bar or a trailer bike. These attach to your bicycle and allow your kids to learn to pedal while relying on you for balance. This will take away some of the fear of falling and make cycling a fun experience.
Practice on sidewalks and driveways when your kids start riding their own bicycles. Teach them the basics like how to turn and stop.
Ride with your kids. Plan your ride and make sure it's child-appropriate. Find a short ride over flat terrain away from traffic.
Give your children a chance to get off the bike for rest and a different experience. Stop at a playground or garden.
Bring snacks and water to keep tummies full and bodies well-hydrated. Everyone will find the cycling trip much more enjoyable.
Teach while you ride. Impart the bicycle rules of the road to your children as you cycle. Start away from traffic, but explain how to share the road with cars.
