How to Change a Power Wheels Battery

Power Wheels are just like real cars--the batteries die and they need to be charged up and eventually replaced. Smaller model Power Wheels run on a 6-volt battery, while larger models generally take a 12-volt. Power Wheels batteries can be purchased online or at a local Toy R Us store.

Instructions

  1. Collect Information to Change a Power Wheels Battery

    • 1

Read the instructions that came with your specific Power Wheels toy to change the battery correctly. Every model is different, and using the wrong battery in your Power Wheels could cause serious injury and product malfunction.

    • 2

Download product instruction sheets on the Power Wheels by Fisher Price Web site if you have lost the originals (see Resources below).

    • 3

Purchase replacement batteries or battery chargers from Fisher-Price.com (see Resources below). They offer both 6-volt and 12-volt rechargeable replacement batteries for Power Wheels.

    • 4

Call Power Wheels Consumer Affairs if you have questions about how to change your Power Wheels battery. They can be reached at 1-800-348-0751.

    Change Your Power Wheels Battery

    • 5

Open the Power Wheels hood to expose the battery compartment.

    • 6

Unlock the battery by pulling the battery clamp towards you.

    • 7

Remove the old battery. Set it out of children's reach.

    • 8

Check the connector that attaches the battery to the motor (the motor harness) for damage. Make sure the connector looks clean and free of corrosion.

    • 9

Make sure the battery compartment is clean and free from damage. Look for potential acid leaks from the previous battery.

    • 10

Change the battery by pulling the battery clamp forward and dropping the new Power Wheels battery into the battery compartment. Do not use batteries from other brands of ride-on toys.

    • 11

Engage the new battery by plugging it into the motor harness connector.

    • 12

      Close the hood.

    • 13

Place the old battery in a plastic bag to prevent leaking of acid before disposal.

    • 14

Recycle the dead battery at a lead-acid battery recycling plant. A Power Wheels battery can be recycled just like an automotive battery. Batteries can also be conveniently recycled at a local Power Wheels service center.
