Figurines
The Bakugan line has several styles of figurines. Only the spherical Bakugan are intended for game play. They open when the flat magnetic bottom comes in contact with a metallic surface.
There are many forms of Bakugan: dragons, warriors, etc. Each has one of six attributes indicating in which element its strengths lay. These are: Pyrus, Aquos, Ventus, Subterra, Haos and Darkus. Knowing how each attribute interacts with others gives players an advantage.
Each Bakugan has a unique G-Power number representing its power level. It is visible on open figurines.
Cards
There are two types of Bakugan cards: Ability Cards and metallic Gate Cards.
The Gate Cards are platforms on which the Bakugan do battle. The cards have a series of numbers that add or subtract points from a Bakugan's G-Power based on its attribute. There may also be instructions on the bottom of Gate Cards that affect the battle.
Ability Cards are collected by players and used during battles. A player's collection of cards and the ability to use them strategically have a great effect on battles.
Game Play
All accessories come with a rule book and explanations of how each affects game play.
The basic game involves two players who each choose three Bakugan, Gate Cards and Ability Cards. Each player lays one Gate Card face down end to end with the opponent's card. The youngest player starts by rolling one of his spheres onto the cards. If the Bakugan does not open, each player rolls in turn until one does. If a Bakugan stops on a card but does not open or open completely, it is considered open.
If a Bakugan opens on a Gate Card where there is already an opponent's Bakugan, battle occurs. The card is flipped and players follow the revealed instructions. Players may then use Ability Cards in turn, starting with the player whose Bakugan opened last. Ability Cards tell when they may be played and the effects they have. Add the effects of the Ability Cards and Gate Card to the G-Power on each Bakugan. The player with the highest overall number wins and puts the Gate Card into his used pile. Used Ability Cards and Bakugan are discarded into each player's used pile.
Whoever wins the best of three wins the game.
Caveats
If a Bakugan opens on a card that has one of that player's Bakugan on it, it is moved to the other card if it is empty or has an opponent's Bakugan on it. If the opponent's Bakugan is on it, battle ensues. If the player already has a Bakugan on the other card, the player wins the card on which the Bakugan landed, and the first Bakugan goes into his used pile.
If a Bakugan opens causing an opponent's Bakugan to fall off the card, that Bakugan automatically wins that battle.
