How to Make a Homemade Batarang

Batman's modified boomerang, nicknamed batarang, first appear in issue 31 of "Detective Comics" where Batman uses it to escape from a cage by switching a distant lever and breaking a chandelier. Despite their lethal force, Batman never uses his batarangs to kill opponents, as the violent deaths of his parents caused him to forswear such methods. Since this first appearance in 1939, artists reimagined the batarang many times, adding additional decoration and function such as collapsible wings and a stylized bat-like appearance.

Non-corrugated cardboard
Marker
Ruler
Craft knife

Tin foil

Instructions

Original Design

  Draw a crescent that opens downward on a piece of cardboard. Sketch a semi-circle, with the horizontal line on the bottom. Draw an arch from the left corner of the base to the right corner of the base. Erase the horizontal line leaving the crescent behind.

  Draw arches along the interior curve of the crescent to form a scalloped edge resembling a bat's wing.

  Cut out the shape.

  Glue the cut-out to a piece of tin foil. Fold the edges of the tin foil over the shape and conform them to the cardboard. If necessary, cut the tin foil to permit more folds and get rid of excess.

  Spray paint the batarang black. Dry for 48 to 72 hours in a well-ventilated area.
Modern Design

  Draw a straight horizontal line 6 inches long on the piece of cardboard. Sketch a vertical line in the middle of the horizontal line. Extend the line 1 inch above and 2 inches below the horizontal line.

  Connect the ends of the horizontal line and the bottom of the vertical line to form a triangle.

  Measure along the horizontal line 2 inches from the left end and place a mark. Repeat on the right.

  Draw three straight lines between the mark on the horizontal line and the side of the triangle to form the fingers of the batarang wings.

  Draw a semi-circular arch between the tip of each finger to form the flap of skin between each digit.

  Draw a 1-inch wide circular head centered on the horizontal line where it intersects with the vertical line.

  Add an upright triangular protrusion on either side of the head to form the ears.

  Trace over the outline of the batarang. Erase any unnecessary lines.

  Cut out the shape.

  Glue the batarang down onto a sheet of tin foil. Cut and fold the tin foil so that it covers the cardboard tightly conforming to the shape of the batarang. Snip the edge of the tin foil so that it has fingers like a rivet and then bend the fingers over the edges of the cardboard shape.

  Spray paint the batarang black.
