How to Assemble a Toy Sonic Screwdriver

Since its debut in 1968, the "sonic screwdriver" has been a mainstay of the "Doctor Who" television series. Since the relaunch of the series in 2005, each Doctor has had his own unique sonic screwdriver always at the ready to help in any situation. It can scan objects and open locks, manual and electronic. Toy replicas of the screwdrivers are on the market. To assemble the latest version, used by the 11th Doctor, you need three L1154 batteries and a more traditional screwdriver: a Phillips head mini.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 LL1154 batteries (also called "button cell" batteries)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screwdriver from its packaging and grip it with both hands. Twist the top part (from the silver ridged section to the green light) and pull the screwdriver apart. The green battery casing will pull out with the top part.

    • 2

Unscrew the two screws in the green casing and remove the cover.

    • 3

Insert the batteries with the top ridge of each pointing up.

    • 4

Screw the cover back on. Be careful not to strip the screws.

    • 5

Align the bottom part of the sonic screwdriver with the grooves along the green casing.

    • 6

Push the bottom piece up onto the green casing and connect it with the top piece. Once the connection is made, slide the screwdriver together.

    • 7

Test the sonic screwdriver by pushing the lower black button on its mid-section. This should cause a high-pitched sound and the green light to glow.

    • 8

Push the top black button to extend the sonic screwdriver, replicating the "scan mode." When it is extended, open the lid on the bottom of the screwdriver and push the big red button within to activate the light and a different sound.
