Install the "Happy Birthday Elmo" software from the CD that comes with your doll on your home computer. This software includes several features that allow you to personalize the doll. Common names are included with this software, while uncommon names will need to be downloaded from the Fisher Price website. If your child has a common name, you can skip to Step 6.
Visit the Fisher Price website to select and download the child's name if uncommon. The link for this website is in the Resources section.
Preview the name to make sure it's pronounced correctly. When you find the name you want Elmo to say, click "Download Name," then rename the file "User1" and save it to your desktop.
Plug in your Happy Birthday Elmo doll to the computer by using the USB cord that came with it. Navigate to "My Computer" then your C drive. Scroll down until you see a folder titled "Program Files" and double-click it. Inside this folder will be another folder titled "Fisher Price - Elmo Knows Your Name." Double-click the folder so it opens.
Click on the folder titled "Names" inside the "Fisher Price - Elmo Knows Your Name" folder, then drag the "User1" file into the folder.
Launch the "Happy Birthday Elmo" software by clicking the icon on your desktop. Click "Continue" on the program's website to get to the "Personalize" menu.
Scroll through the "Select Name" window. If your child has a common name, it will already be on the list. If your child has a name not found on the list, select the "User1" file. Once selected, press the "Download To Elmo" button. Disconnect the Elmo doll from the computer when the download is finished. Your Elmo doll will now recite your child's name when it talks.
